Since 1953, Rogue River has been crowing. It was started as a clever (silly) way to let folks know that Rogue River is a town....not just a river! The contest has grown into a full weekend community event which includes a car show on Sunday. People travel long distances just to participate in this annual event in hopes of earning the famed title. No ROOSTER? No problem. The Human Crow contest is for those whom wish to personally get active. See official rules for both contests below or in the Kiwanis Rooster Crow booklet which is published each year.
Saturday begins with the Rooster Crow Run/Walk. Entries are accepted the day of the event.
At 10:00am is the Rooster Crow Parade. Businesses, Churches, social and civic groups, antique cars, tractors, adult and junior riders, youth and adult entries parade down main street for the best home town parade in Southern Oregon. Sure, it's hokey but why not! It's just a whole lot of fun. Want to be in the parade? No problem! The cost to enter is $20 which helps defer the costs for the trophies. This is small town America and no one does it better than Rogue River! After the parade is over, wander over to the concessionaires, vendor booths, food booths located in the Umpqua Bank parking lot, First street and Rooster Crow Arena. At 2:15pm is the Human Rooster Crow Contest. If you are interested in commercial or non-profit booth space, please contact the City of Rogue River at (541) 582-4401.
Rooster Crow Contest official rules:
The rules are simple. Each person can enter one rooster; the rooster must remain in the cage throughout the contest. An impartial judge is assigned, and the tallying begins at 2:45pm. No mechanical, electrical, physical or chemical stimulants or devices are allowed. Moreover, Roosters cannot be mistreated or abused. Each Rooster has 30 minutes to crow his heart out. The assigned judge keeps a tally of each cock-a-doodle-doo crowed in 30 minutes. A cash prize is given to the winner.
Human Crow Contest official rules:
Anyone can enter. People of all ages give their best crow for the microphone. Winners are selected based on crowd response. There is no entry fee for the Human Crow, just bring your best voice and let'er rip.
